Investigation of microcalcification

Screen-detected microcalcification in a 50 year old female

The following images show a series of levels through a block from a breast core biopsy taken at the screening clinic to investigate microcalcification. Only a single calc was retrieved (see x ray below) and the first 6 levels showed normal breast tissue only but then a duct starts to appear which by Level 8 shows a calc and surrounding inflammation and fibrosis - these features are commonly seen in ducts containing high grade DCIS. As the levels deepen the DCIS becomes clear.

Level 10 showing first sign of DCIS and comedo necrosis - 'mouse-over' for detail.
